A compelling cause. A worthy mission.
An immensely exciting future.
I was raised in the Catholic Church, and have always sensed that music plays a significant role in uniting the Body of Christ. When I was young, I played saxophone with the church choir almost every Sunday. The saxophone was sort of an awkward instrument to play with the church choir, but someone there saw talent in me and asked me to join. I remember practicing in the church basement every Wednesday night and feeling that music played an important role in what we were doing on Sundays. I wasn't a singer yet, but I remember how the words of the songs stuck in my head - I can still remember many of them - and how they reminded me of God's presence in my daily life.
Years later, in college, a church friend heard me singing in the car and asked me to join the worship team. I had never sung in front of a group of people before. Reluctantly, I agreed and I am so glad that I did. While playing music in church when I was a child laid musical groundwork for me, singing in church helped me to find and develop my voice and confidence in a new way. It brought me closer to God and closer to my brothers and sisters in Christ. Though I no longer attend a Catholic Church, I remain convicted that music has a unifying power for the Church.
I went on to obtain a bachelor of arts degree in music, but music is not my profession. Deo Cantamus offers an opportunity for me and others like me, to unite in song with other talented singers in a special way. The opportunity to bring sacred texts to life or tell the stories of God's people through song a high caliber of musicianship is an absolute joy.
It is now my privilege to serve on the board of directors for Deo Cantamus and continue to be part of this great work.
