I can still remember my first practice with the choir in 2012. One of the pieces we were singing was Handel's "My Heart Is Inditing." This being my first experience with a choir, learning this piece was, from my perspective, like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. I stuck with it, and after a couple practices it quickly became one of my favorite works of music! Before this I had only attended one of the concerts but knew immediately this was an organization I wanted to be part of. I actually knew the Artistic Director, Al Hawkins, before he moved to the Minneapolis area, but I didn't know anything about Deo Cantamus.

Over these short years of being involved as a singer it's been nothing short of pure joy. Singing with like-minded people and working through so many beautiful pieces of music (new and old) is truly a wonderful experience. It has improved me as a musician and deepened my appreciation for music. Additionally, it cultivates relationships with people that are working toward the same goal.
I have always enjoyed music, but this gives me the opportunity to take part in something larger and bring what I learn back to my local church setting and also back home to my family. For me it reinforces the need in our lives for having good music that is done well and to the glory of God. Being able to see my oldest daughter singing in the children's choir is a joy, but also reveals to me the need for continued involvement for her sake and the rest of my children. I am reminded of Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. What a beautiful representation of the body of Christ and opportunity to minister to one another as we grow closer to His likeness!
A compelling cause. A worthy mission.
An immensely exciting future.
